Course Description

When in a high-stakes professional environment such as law, you need to manage your personal resources - your time, your emotions and your personal wellbeing. This course covers four essential self-management topics:

  • Stress, its management and its potential benefits
  • Time management, identifying when you perform at your best and improving productivity
  • Your default behaviour in teamwork and how that affects you and others
  • Your personal accountability for maintaining professional standards, no matter how tired, stressed or pressured by others

We explore what we mean by stress, how it affects you in the workplace and potential ways of coping with, or even harnessing, its effects. We look at barriers you may encounter to effective time management, explain ways of dealing with procrastination, and suggest effective methods to improve your ability to prioritise. You will also have the opportunity to identify your default behaviour in teamwork situations and learn more about associated strengths and weaknesses of different team player roles.

Who is this course for?

Each of these topics and associated skills are explored in the context of working as a junior lawyer, including SQE students, NQs, and up to around three years post qualification. Though the examples we use focus on law firms, the same concepts apply if you are working in-house. The course is also useful to other legal professionals.
